Welcome to Vesper City
A free crime RPG you play in your browser, on a computer or a phone, with nothing to download. Vesper City is a city where the 1920s never ended: bootleggers, bent cops, smoky speakeasies and families who settle things the old way.
You start with nothing. Pull crimes for your first dollars, train at the gym, take a job and work your way up. Join a gang and rise from soldier to Don, settle scores in fights with other players, and buy property and businesses in every district.
Play it as a painted city you walk through, or in the Classic view of newspaper-style pages. At heart it is a text-based mafia MMO where every rival is a real player, and the city's newspaper writes up what you all get up to. See the screenshots.

Questions
Is it free?
Yes. You can play everything for free, for as long as you like. Gold, bought with real money, only buys convenience and looks (a shorter wait, a nicer hat), never power: nothing is for sale that playing cannot earn.
Who can play?
Adults only: you must be 18 or over. The game is set in the 1920s underworld, with crime, fights, bootlegging and strong language. We ask for your date of birth when you sign up, and we never ask for ID.
Can I win real money?
No. The cash, Gold and items in the game are play money: they can never be cashed out, sold for real money or won in anything that costs real money. Gold is bought in our own store only, and the odds of every crate are published.
Do I need to download anything?
No. It plays in any modern browser on a computer, a tablet or a phone, with the same account everywhere. There is nothing to install and no app store to visit.
How much time does it take?
As much as you want to give it. Your energy and nerve refill on their own, so a few minutes a few times a day keeps you moving; evenings and weekends are when the gangs come out.
Which languages can I play in?
English, Spanish, French, Portuguese (Brazil) and German. Pick yours at the top of any page; the game, the newspaper and the rules follow you.
Can I play with friends?
Yes. Start a gang or join one, hold turf together, send mail, trade on the Bazaar and fight side by side. Everyone in the city is a real player, and the newspaper reports what you all get up to.
What are gangs, exactly?
A family of players under a Don, with ranks, a shared treasury and turf to defend. Gangs raid, go to war and run rackets; the biggest ones make the front page. You can join one from the start and rise through its ranks.
Is it safe? What if someone bothers me?
Swearing is part of the setting, but threats, hate, scams and sharing anyone's personal details are not allowed and are acted on. You can block anyone, report any message, profile or story with one click, and nobody is told who reported them. See the rules.
Is cheating allowed?
No. Bots, scripts, exploits and playing several accounts are banned for good, and the ban is final. Real-money trading of Gold, items or accounts outside our own store is banned too. See the rules.
